Give your heart some love this REDFEB
How often do you think about your heart? This vital organ works continuously, ensuring blood flows throughout your body, yet it is often overlooked until a problem arises.
REDFEB is a month dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease, and a reminder to prioritise your heart’s wellbeing.
Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) Chair and local GP Dr Jodi Culbert is encouraging residents to take charge of their heart health by booking a heart health check and embracing a healthier lifestyle.
“Heart disease can often go unnoticed until it’s too late, which is why regular checks with your GP are so important,” Dr Culbert said.
“By understanding your risks and making small, positive changes, you can make a difference to your long-term health.”
For those living in the Murrumbidgee region, the importance of heart health is even greater. The latest data shows that coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the Murrumbidgee.
Heart health checks are simple, quick, and non-invasive. They assess key risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and lifestyle habits, offering tailored advice to help protect your heart.
While heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, many of its risks, such as smoking, poor diet, high blood pressure, and lack of exercise, are preventable. Adopting heart-friendly habits can make a significant impact.
“Including more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meals, and aiming for 30 minutes of physical activity most days, are small steps with big benefits,” Dr Culbert said.
“It’s about creating routines that work for you, which become healthy habits and bring lasting improvements to your health.”
MPHN CEO Stewart Gordon is also encouraging the community to act this REDFEB.
“This February, we’re encouraging everyone in the Murrumbidgee region to book a heart health check and consider how healthy eating and regular exercise can improve their heart health,” Mr Gordon said.
“Together, these steps can help reduce the risk of heart disease and support a healthier, more fulfilling life.”
