Thank you: celebrating our primary care nurses

Murrumbidgee Medical & Primary Care Centre registered nurses Rachael Fletcher, Tanisha Houghton, Chloe Amery & Kristine Palingcod. There are 191 primary care nurses working in general practices across the Murrumbidgee region.

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) joins the community in celebrating Primary Care Nurses Day today, 5 February.

The Murrumbidgee’s primary care nurses provide care in settings outside the hospital environment, including aged care, community health, general practice, custodial services, and schools.

MPHN CEO Stewart Gordon said primary care nurses play a critical role in maintaining the region’s health and wellbeing.

“Primary care nurses are at the heart of community healthcare,” Mr Gordon said.

“We rely on them to care for us, support our loved ones, and provide guidance and reassurance when we need it most.

“Their dedication and skill are fundamental to ensuring comprehensive, accessible health care for regional and rural communities.”

Nicole Horton, Practice Manager of Murrumbidgee Medical & Primary Care Centre in Leeton, said practice nurses treat the whole person rather than only immediate symptoms.

“Our nurses take the time to understand each patient’s unique background, lifestyle, and emotional wellbeing, creating a holistic approach to healthcare,” Ms Horton said.

“By building strong, trusting relationships with patients, our nurses can identify underlying factors influencing health, such as stress, family dynamics, or social circumstances.

“This comprehensive care model allows them to provide not only physical treatment but also emotional support, preventative advice, and health education, ensuring that patients feel seen, heard, and empowered to take control of their wellbeing.

“It's this deep, individualised care that truly makes a difference in achieving long-term health outcomes and a positive patient experience.”
